“West Adams (29th and Halldale)” was shot using the Jaunt One 360 camera, and created with a generous grant from the Jaunt Cinematic VR Lab at the University of Southern California. Describing indeterminacy, the composer John Cage said, “My intention is to let things be themselves.” “West Adams (29th and Halldale)”, is an experiment in the composition of visual music, inspired by years of living and walking around the Los Angeles neighborhood. I wanted to take Cage’s ideas of indeterminacy and the ordinary into creating 360 video by setting up a camera on a residential street corner, recording for exactly one minute, and using whatever was captured in that minute to create animation. The animation itself was inspired by learning about the concept of motion in Athabaskan or Dene languages from the folklore scholar Tok Thompson. And the composition of the animation in time was inspired by its two soundtracks, the lush Yosi Horikawa track “Bubbles” and the audio recorded with the video, of the corner of 29th St. and Halldale Ave., just as they are.
